Abstract

Artikel ini membahas sistem kepercayaan Batak pada masa pra-kolonial yang mempercayai kultus jiwa manusia. Dalam sistem kepercayaan ini, datu menempati peran penting dengan pengetahuan magis atau hadatuon yang dimilikinya. Pengetahuan ini dicatat dalam pustaha yang berisi tulisan dan gambar atau simbol magis. Pada saat upacara, simbol magis ini digambar oleh datu untuk terhubung dengan alam spirit. Relasi dunia bawah dan dunia atas yang tergambarkan dalam simbol magis Batak ini juga hidup dalam berbagai kebudayaan lain. Untuk memahami simbol magis tersebut, artikel ini melakukan kajian literatur untuk mendeskripsikan metode komparatif dari Carl Schuster. Melalui metode komparatif tersebut, bisa disimpulkan simbol magis Batak tidak diciptakan oleh orang Batak sendiri, melainkan suatu cabang dari tradisi kuno yang sangat beragam dan menyebar dengan luas di berbagai kebudayaan. Kendati berbeda dalam keragaman bentuk dan formulasinya, simbol-simbol ini memiliki kemiripan di tataran gagasan, yang pada gilirannya membantu untuk menjelaskan simbol-simbol tersebut satu sama lain.
