Sudah banyak orang yang menjelaskan semiotika, terutama dalam kaitannya dengan teks sastra. Tapi tidak banyak yang membincangkan dan menuliskannya dalam tulisan yang mudah dicerna. Ini karena sifat semiotika yang memang cukup rumit untuk dipahami, terutama jika landasan filosofisnya tidak terlalu terjelaskan dengan baik. Dalam konteks semiotika Charles Sanders Peirce, banyak orang langsung membahasnya dalam situasi penandaan, dan ini memunculkan sedikit banyak problematika dalam memahami teori semiotika Peirce itu sendiri. Tulisan ini mencoba memberikan gagasan bahwa memahami sebuah teori tidak boleh dilepaskan dari landasan filosofisnya, dan untuk kasus Peirce, landasan filosofis semiotika nya adalah Pragmatisme, yang tentunya sangat khas Amerika SerikatReferences
