Abstract

ABSTRACT

Children’s mental and emotional health is a crucial aspect of optimal development. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is used as a screening instrument to identify children’s emotional and behavioral problems at an early stage. Film media, particularly educational films, holds great potential as an engaging and accessible tool for children’s emotional learning. This article discusses the implementation of the Inside Out Film-Based Emotional Education Program, which was adapted to the results of the SDQ screening within the empowerment program of Mitra Orda Pemda Kota Cimahi activities. The study employed a simple mixed-methods approach, beginning with SDQ screening of 87 students from Sekolah Rakyat Merdeka Pelajar 8, followed by film screening, interactive discussions, emotional expression games, and collective reflections. The screening results indicated that 47% of students experienced emotional problems, more than 53% faced behavioral difficulties, and 23% encountered challenges in peer relationships. After participating in the program, children appeared more capable of identifying basic emotions, expressing their feelings confidently, and being more open with teachers and peers. Teachers also reported positive changes in students’ emotional openness. This program demonstrates that a film-based approach can enhance children’s basic emotional literacy, although its impact remains limited to the short term. Program continuity involving teachers, parents, and institutional support is required to achieve longer-term effects.
