Abstract

This study delves into the intricacies of the Agama Djawa Sunda or Djawa Sunda Religion (ADS) and its influence on Sunda cosmology, with a specific focus on the community of Cigugur, Kuningan. Anchored in the ancestral tenets of Sunda Wiwitan, ADS is a distinct belief system inherent to the Sundanese culture, highlighting indigenous rituals and linguistic elements. The objective of this study is to delineate the evolution of ADS and its pivotal role in sustaining traditional values and beliefs amidst the processes of acculturation, assimilation, and syncretism with diverse cultural and religious influences. Utilizing a qualitative methodological framework, the study synergizes ethnographic approaches, historical analysis, and textual scrutiny to comprehend the progression and sustainability of ADS and Sunda cosmology in the evolving socio-cultural milieu of Cigugur. Data collection encompassed in-depth interviews, participatory observation in ritualistic practices and ceremonies, and comprehensive document analysis. The findings unravel the historical genesis of ADS and trace its developmental trajectory. Emanating from Sunda Wiwitan, ADS amalgamates elements of humanistic and nationalistic ideologies. It underscores the concept of divine unity and the epitome of human existence, as manifested in communal rituals like Seren Taun and the moral doctrines encapsulated in Sanghyang Siksakandang Karesian. The Cigugur community demonstrates an exemplary paradigm of religious tolerance and societal cohesion, steered by the doctrines of ADS. The intricate interrelation of religion, culture, and societal frameworks in Cigugur accentuates the instrumental role of ADS in fostering communal concord and safeguarding cultural patrimony. Far exceeding the realm of conventional belief systems, the teachings of ADS in Cigugur epitomize a lifestyle that cultivates harmony, tolerance, and collective solidarity. This study emphatically highlights the critical role of ADS in the conservation of cultural traditions and in sculpting the cosmological perceptions of the Sundanese populace.
