Abstract

Abstract

The body in Foucault's conception is often juxtaposed with the discourse of power. In this context, gestures are regulated by the power of modern institutions such as hospitals, prisons, schools, and other institutions. In Foucault's conception, there is no separation between the body of men and the body of women amid control carried out by the institution. This raises strong criticism from Bartky that it treats different disciplines attached between the bodies of men and women. This criticism from Bartky aims to dispute the concept of the relation of the body and power. According to him, because there are different disciplines on the bodies of men and women, the problem is no longer about the power of institutions but patriarchy. In modern society, according to Bartky patriarchy has changed and practiced through institutions. In this paper, the debate about femininity also formed through consumerism is also outlined as a critique of Bartky's view.

Keywords: power; body; patriarchy; consumption.
