Abstract

The Lelang Lebak Lebung (inland water auction) tradition is a local wisdom that functions not only as an inland fisheries management system but also institutionalizes a harmonious relationship between humans, nature, and spirituality. This study aims to analyze the social practices of the Lelang Lebak Lebung tradition in Baturaja Village and to identify the Islamic ecotheological values embedded within it. Employing a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach, data were gathered through interviews, observation, and documentation involving customary leaders, religious figures, pengemin (auction winners), and the general public. Data analysis was conducted in two stages: a sociological approach to deconstruct the dimensions of the tradition's social practices, followed by an analysis of Fazlun M. Khalid’s Islamic Ecotheology, further reinforced by Travis Hirschi’s Social Control Theory. The findings reveal that this tradition operates circularly through four main dimensions: a consensus-based auction system, multi-sectoral oversight, environmental conservation through the protection of the swamp's biological cycle, and communal harvesting (bekarang). Theologically, these practices reflect the pillars of Tawhid (nature as a sacred trust), Khalifah (institutionalization of management responsibility), Mizan (synchronization of economy with the hydrological cycle), and Anti-Fasad (enforcement of sanctions against destructive fishing gear). Furthermore, community adherence to customary rules and conservation practices is reinforced by social control mechanisms involving attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief.  This study concludes that the Lelang Lebak Lebung tradition has successfully endured as a stronghold for aquatic ecosystem defense because it is sustained by an Islamic spiritual anchor that integrates religious rituals into the local economic system.
