1. Advertising Policy
The journal does not accept or publish advertisements and does not receive advertising revenue. This policy applies to the journal website, published articles, issue files, and official journal communications.
Paid promotional articles, sponsored advertising placements, affiliate promotions, and advertisements presented as scholarly content are not accepted. Advertising space or promotional exposure cannot be purchased through publication fees.
Journal announcements, calls for papers, publication notices, and factual information about the publisher, scholarly partners, and indexing services are provided for information. They must not be used to conceal paid advertising or imply endorsements that have not been granted.
Books and other materials discussed in scholarly articles or book reviews are selected for their academic relevance. A publisher or author cannot purchase a favorable review. Relevant relationships and the provision of review copies must be disclosed.
2. Purpose and Relevance of Outreach
Direct marketing includes invitations to submit manuscripts, calls for papers, and communications intended to increase awareness of the journal and its published research. These activities must be appropriate to a scholarly publication and relevant to the intended recipients.
Outreach should focus on researchers, readers, and institutions working in religious studies, cross-cultural studies, interfaith relations, and other areas covered by the journal’s Focus and Scope. Indiscriminate mass solicitation and repeated invitations unrelated to a recipient’s expertise are not permitted.
Communications must identify the journal, explain the purpose of the message, and provide an identifiable sender and a valid contact channel. Personalized references to a recipient’s work must be accurate and must not imply an assessment that has not actually taken place.
3. Accuracy and Transparency
Promotional messages and materials must provide truthful, current, and verifiable information. They must accurately describe the journal’s scope, publishing model, editorial procedures, and submission requirements.
- Journal identity: Clearly identify the journal and publisher. Do not imply affiliation with another journal, organization, or indexing service without a factual basis.
- Indexing and metrics: Verify claims before use. Identify the source and relevant year of any metric or ranking, and do not present an indexing application as confirmed inclusion.
- Fees: Invitations to submit must provide a clearly identifiable link to the Author Fees Policy. Free reader access or free submission must not be described in a way that conceals publication charges.
- Editorial assessment: Invitations must explain that submissions remain subject to the journal’s normal assessment and peer-review requirements. An invitation does not constitute acceptance.
- Timeframes: Communicate review and publication estimates as targets subject to the published process. Do not promise guaranteed acceptance or publication by a particular date.
- Open access: Describe published articles as freely accessible under the Open Access Policy. Optional subscriptions to email updates must not be presented as necessary for access to journal content.
Claims of guaranteed citations, research impact, career benefits, or preferential editorial treatment must not be used to solicit manuscripts. Artificial deadlines and misleading statements about limited publication places must also be avoided.
4. Communication Frequency and Recipient Preferences
Outreach must be proportionate and unobtrusive. The journal avoids excessive follow-ups, duplicate messages, and continued solicitation after a recipient declines or requests removal from promotional communications.
Direct promotional messages must provide a simple way to decline further outreach, such as replying to the sender or using an unsubscribe option where available. Requests must be honored promptly and without charge.
Contact details must be handled responsibly and used only for appropriate journal-related purposes. Recipients’ email addresses must not be exposed to other recipients through bulk messages, sold, or supplied to third parties for unrelated marketing.
Opting out of promotional messages does not affect the assessment of a manuscript or access to published research. Essential correspondence about an active submission, review assignment, or publication-integrity matter may continue where necessary.
5. Editorial Independence
Outreach activities and revenue considerations must not determine editorial decisions. Invited manuscripts are assessed according to the same applicable standards as other submissions, including scholarly merit, originality, ethical integrity, and relevance to the journal.
No editor, staff member, or representative may promise acceptance in exchange for payment, institutional support, promotional cooperation, or use of an optional service. Any promotion of Fast Track Review must accurately disclose its optional nature, separate fee, and limitations under the Author Fees Policy.
Relevant relationships must be managed under the Conflict of Interest Policy. Editorial procedures and funding arrangements are described in the Peer Review Process and Revenue Sources pages.
Principle for all invitations: An invitation to submit is an invitation to editorial consideration. It does not guarantee acceptance, a favorable review, or publication within a specified timeframe.
6. Oversight and Enquiries
The editorial team is responsible for ensuring that official promotional materials and outreach comply with this policy. Any person or service communicating on behalf of the journal must follow the same requirements.
Inaccurate or misleading promotional information must be corrected promptly. Unauthorized messages or claims made in the journal’s name should be reported for verification and appropriate action.
To ask about a communication, request removal from promotional outreach, or report a concern, contact the Editorial Office. Where possible, include a copy of the message or a link to the material concerned.
