AI Usage Policy

Guidelines for the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence by Authors, Editors, and Peer Reviewers

Likuid: Jurnal Ekonomi Industri Halal acknowledges the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in scholarly research, academic writing, and scientific publishing. In alignment with applicable regulations and guidelines for scientific journal accreditation, this policy establishes principles and requirements governing the responsible use of AI tools by authors, editors, and peer reviewers involved in the journal's publication process.

General Principles

The use of AI tools in scholarly publishing must be guided by academic integrity, transparency, originality, accuracy, confidentiality, and responsible research practices. AI technologies may serve as supporting instruments in research and publication activities but must not replace human intellectual contribution, independent scholarly judgment, or professional accountability. All participants in the publication process remain responsible for ensuring that their work and decisions comply with applicable ethical standards and the journal's publication policies.

AI Use by Authors

Authors may employ AI tools to assist with language refinement, grammar correction, translation, organization of ideas, coding, data processing, and other appropriate research-related activities, provided that such use is transparent, ethically justified, and consistent with accepted academic practices.

Authors are required to observe the following provisions:

  1. Transparency and Disclosure: Authors must disclose any substantive use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies in preparing their manuscripts. The disclosure should identify the AI tool and describe its purpose and contribution. Routine spelling, grammar, and formatting assistance generally does not require disclosure unless otherwise stipulated by the journal.
  2. Author Accountability: Authors retain full responsibility for the entire manuscript, including its arguments, references, research data, calculations, interpretations, tables, figures, and conclusions, regardless of whether AI tools have been used during its preparation.
  3. Verification and Accuracy: All AI-assisted content must be carefully reviewed and verified by the authors. References, citations, quotations, factual statements, and statistical results generated or suggested by AI must be checked against reliable and, where applicable, original sources. Fabricated, misleading, inaccurate, or unverifiable information must not be included in the manuscript.
  4. Originality and Intellectual Property: Authors must ensure that their submissions represent original scholarly work and comply with applicable standards concerning plagiarism, citation, attribution, copyright, and intellectual property. The use of AI does not exempt authors from acknowledging the work and ideas of other researchers.
  5. Research Integrity and Methodological Transparency: AI must not be used to fabricate, falsify, manipulate, or misrepresent research data, empirical findings, analytical outputs, images, or scholarly conclusions. Where AI materially contributes to research design, data analysis, interpretation, or other methodological procedures, authors must provide sufficient information about its role to enable readers to understand the research process.
  6. Authorship and Contributions: AI tools cannot be credited as authors or co-authors of manuscripts submitted to the journal. Authorship is reserved for individuals who can make accountable intellectual contributions, approve the final manuscript, and fulfill the ethical and professional responsibilities associated with scholarly publication.
  7. Confidentiality and Data Protection: Authors must not upload confidential, sensitive, personal, unpublished, or otherwise restricted research information to AI services unless appropriate authorization and safeguards are in place and the use complies with applicable privacy, research ethics, and data-protection requirements.

When disclosure is required, authors must include an AI Usage Statement in their manuscript, preferably in a dedicated section or in another location specified by the journal. The statement should identify the tools used and explain the nature of their contribution. If no AI tools were used, authors may include the following declaration:

“The authors declare that no AI tools were used in the preparation of this manuscript.”

AI Use by Editors

Editors may use AI tools for appropriate administrative and editorial support, including organizing submission information, improving routine correspondence, and conducting preliminary language checks. Nevertheless, editorial evaluation and publication decisions must remain under human control and professional responsibility.

Editors are expected to comply with the following requirements:

  1. Independent Editorial Judgment: Editors must retain full responsibility for all editorial decisions, including initial manuscript screening, reviewer selection, revision requests, and decisions regarding acceptance or rejection.
  2. Scholarly Evaluation: Manuscripts must be assessed according to their academic quality, relevance to the scope of Likuid: Jurnal Ekonomi Industri Halal, originality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, and contribution to the development of halal industry studies, Islamic economics, Islamic finance, and sustainable economic development.
  3. Confidentiality Protection: Editors must safeguard the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts, reviewer reports, author identities, and other unpublished editorial materials. Such information must not be entered into public or third-party AI systems without appropriate authorization and adequate security measures.
  4. Verification of AI-Assisted Outputs: Any AI-generated or AI-assisted content used in editorial correspondence or administrative processes must be reviewed and verified before it is relied upon or communicated to authors and reviewers.
  5. Responsible Use of Detection Tools: Editors must not make allegations of plagiarism, research misconduct, or inappropriate AI use solely on the basis of AI-detection software or automated assessments. Any concerns must be evaluated using relevant evidence and established editorial procedures.
  6. Disclosure of Material Use: Editors must disclose AI use when required by the journal or when such use materially affects an editorial process, in accordance with applicable policies and ethical standards.

AI Use by Peer Reviewers

Peer reviewers may use AI tools for limited assistance with general language support or the organization of their own review notes, provided that confidentiality, impartiality, and the integrity of the peer-review process are maintained.

Peer reviewers must adhere to the following principles:

  1. Independent Expert Assessment: Reviewers must independently evaluate the manuscript's originality, theoretical foundation, research design, methodology, data quality, analytical procedures, interpretation, and contribution to the relevant scholarly field.
  2. Confidentiality of Review Materials: Unpublished manuscripts, supplementary documents, author information, and confidential peer-review communications must not be uploaded to or disclosed through public or third-party AI tools unless expressly authorized and adequately protected.
  3. Human Responsibility for Review Reports: Reviewers must not delegate substantive manuscript evaluation or the preparation of confidential review reports to AI tools in ways that undermine independent expert judgment, confidentiality, or the integrity of peer review.
  4. Verification of Recommendations: Any AI-assisted observations, comments, or recommendations must be critically assessed and verified by the reviewer before inclusion in a review report.
  5. Independent Publication Recommendations: Recommendations concerning manuscript acceptance, revision, or rejection must be based on the reviewer's own scholarly assessment and must not rely solely on AI-generated evaluations.
  6. Disclosure to the Editor: Reviewers must inform the handling editor of material AI assistance in preparing their review when disclosure is required by the journal's policies.

Disclosure, Compliance, and Editorial Assessment

Likuid: Jurnal Ekonomi Industri Halal reserves the right to request clarification regarding the use of AI tools at any stage of manuscript submission, peer review, editorial evaluation, or publication. Authors, editors, and reviewers must provide accurate and complete information concerning AI use whenever requested in accordance with the journal's policies.

Failure to disclose substantive AI assistance, submission of inaccurate declarations, or misuse of AI technologies may lead to further clarification, requests for manuscript revision, rejection, or other appropriate editorial action. For articles that have already been published, the journal may consider a correction, retraction, or other measures where justified by the available evidence and consistent with established publication ethics procedures.

AI-detection systems, when used, may serve only as supplementary assessment instruments. Their results are not conclusive evidence of misconduct and must not constitute the sole basis for editorial decisions or allegations against authors.
