SEMANTIC ADAPTATION OF ARABIC LOANWORDS IN ACEHNESE: A CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS OF MEANING EXTENSION AND NARROWING

Background: Language contact between Arabic and Acehnese since the introduction of Islam to the Indonesian archipelago has resulted in numerous Arabic loanwords undergoing semantic adaptation. These lexical borrowings often experience changes in meaning rather than retaining their original semantic scope..
Purpose: This study aims to analyze the semantic differences between Arabic loanwords and their meanings in Acehnese using a contrastive linguistic approach, as well as to identify the factors influencing these semantic changes.
Method: This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. Data consisting of Arabic-derived vocabulary in Acehnese were collected through literature review, documentation, and interviews with language experts. The data were analyzed by comparing the lexical meanings of Arabic source words with their meanings in Acehnese.
Results: The findings reveal that zikir and kitab undergo semantic broadening, whereas ulama, imam, and ziyarah experience semantic narrowing. These semantic changes are influenced by religious, social, institutional, and habitual language-use factors within Acehnese society.
Conclusion: The study demonstrates that semantic changes in Arabic loanwords represent a systematic process of linguistic adaptation rather than linguistic deviation. It contributes to contrastive linguistics and semantic studies by providing new insights into how language contact shapes semantic development in Acehnese.
